Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are one of the biggest names that come to mind when when you think of VOD online. The services are giving TV channels in the west a huge competition with companies like Netflix able to pull out big money deals and make blockbuster hit movies and Tv series.
In Africa Kenya to be specific, TV channels are still the dominant source of entertainment with each household trying to grab a Decoder of their choice. Multichoice’s DSTV is totally dominating the sub-saharan countrie, but we are not going to discuss that in this blog.
One of the things making VOD services not that popular is because of the internet acces and price. Internet is very expensive. I don’t know much about other countries in Africa but my homeland Kenya, having wifi in your house and having to pay for it is a huge luxury. Having to pay for Netflix which costs $8 per month for there standard subscription plus paying internet which price depends on your internet provider is quite a pain. 10gb in Kenya can cost upto KSH 1500. Honestly that’s not enough for streaming movies and series for one whole month. Compared to a cheap decoder and subscription can just cost 800/=. This makes many citizens just to settle with the TV unsatisfying content. I have used all of the VOD available in kenya except for the africans own Showmax and the Local Viusasa, yes I know Viusasa deserves to be mentioned here. Lets have two categories

So we talking of Netflix vs Amazon prime video i won’t talk about showmax that much because i haven’t used it. Once i use it ill release another article. Apologies for that. But come on amazon and netflix are the big dogs here .to be here. SO lets start of with netflix prize. Here you have 3 plans Basic, standard and premium costing $7.99, 9.99, 11.99 respectively. In all you get unlimited contents. Will talk about the contents later. If you have a family and they want to watch show separately standard and premium. Watch the internet price though cz the two stream in HD. And in all you get a free month trial.
Now to amazon, its $2.00 for the first 3 months then you have to pay 6 dollars. You can decide to rent movies if you have prime membership. You know amazon has so many services, commonly its online shopping site.
Noticed i haven’t mentioned HULU. this is because it aint available in Kenya, and most if not all African countries.

Just a reminder i have used the two (amazon and netflix). When it comes to contents. Netflix kicks out Amazon in africa. Amazon has so much geographic restriction. That boring (“this content ain available in your country). Ofcz you can use vpn(Virtual private network) and Baam! But not everyone can do it. Some people don’t know what a vpn is. I managed to watch into the badlands on amazon. And i think that’s the only good stuff i ever watched. On the other hand Netflix has an awesome collection in Africa. Plus you get to watch all the netflix exclusive series including the Marvel series. Ofcz some series are a little behind e.g The vampire diaries is on season 6 by the time am writing this.
Verdict
Well after all that, my verdict is to go for netflix. Unless you know how to use a vpn you can go for Amazon cz of the price.
